Summary

Double Dragon II for the Game Boy is actually a re-skinned version of Technōs Japan's Japanese title Nekketsu Kōha Kunio‑kun: Bangai Rantō Hen, not a sequel to the arcade game Double Dragon II: The Revenge. The English release swaps the original Kunio and Riki characters for brothers Billy and Jimmy, rewrites the storyline, and gives the streets a distinctly Double Dragon look while keeping the core beat‑’em‑up layout. Gameplay feels more pared‑down than the console titles: you can chain punches or a kick, finish with a straight punch or high kick, kneel with both buttons, and execute a skyward uppercut or a collar grab that mimics the classic Renegade moves. The adventure is split into three missions across ten stages, each mission ending in a boss fight that leads from a gritty street to a subway showdown, and finally into the Scorpions’ headquarters where the final opponent, Anderson, awaits. A Link‑cable allows a second player to join as Jimmy, and the game even includes three difficulty levels, though the easiest setting only unlocks the first mission.

Storyline

Double Dragon II: The Revenge puts you in the shoes of Billy Lee, a young martial artist whose city was shattered by nuclear war and overrun by gangs. After his girlfriend is slain by the Black Shadow Warriors and his family dojo is razed, Billy and his brother Jimmy join the Scorpions to stay sharp. The Scorpions soon turn on him when instructor Anderson frames Billy for the murder of fellow member Wright, and commander Gordon orders the brothers’ execution. Hunted across night‑marred urban ruins, Billy must battle endless Scorpion thugs to clear his name. In the original US localization the hero is called McClain, but the core goal remains: defeat the Scorpions and confront Anderson, the true culprit.
