Summary

Double Dragon on the Game Boy manages to squeeze the brawling spirit of the arcade classic into the handheld's tiny screen. While the control scheme mirrors the NES port, the stages are totally reimagined, giving each street‑fight a fresh layout. Every punch, kick and throw the twins can perform is unlocked right away, so you don’t have to grind for combos. The roster of grizzlies is identical to the NES version, but veteran foes such as Abobo and Chin pick up brand‑new attacks that make the battles feel less predictable. Gameplay is single‑player through to the showdown with the gang boss Willy; Jimmy never appears in the story mode, though a two‑player versus mode lets you and a friend square off as the Lee brothers. Tradewest brought this pocket‑sized version to North America and Europe, and it even resurfaced on the 3DS Virtual Console in 2011.

Storyline

Double Dragon on the Game Boy drops you into a gritty urban quest as martial artist Billy Lee, with the option to play as his twin Jimmy in the limited mode. The brothers battle the Black Warriors gang across four distinct missions: a cramped city slum, a noisy factory, a dark forest, and finally the gang’s hideout. Each area ramps up the challenge, culminating in a trap‑filled final stage where the player must navigate hazards to reach the main hall and confront the gang leader Willy. The Game Boy version is strictly single‑player; after the showdown with Willy the game ends, and Jimmy does not appear in the main campaign. The ultimate goal is to rescue Billy’s girlfriend Marian from the clutches of the Black Warriors.
