Summary

The Game Boy version of Double Dragon feels like a familiar side‑scroll beat ’em up, but the levels are completely re‑imagined for the handheld. Every move Billy and Jimmy can learn in the arcade or NES titles is unlocked right away, so you can throw punches, kicks, elbows and even weapon grabs from the first screen. The enemy roster mirrors the NES version, yet characters like Abobo and Chin show off fresh techniques that keep the fights from feeling stale. The campaign is a solo trek that wraps up after the showdown with the gang leader Willy, and unlike the arcade, Jimmy never appears as a playable hero in the story mode. A two‑player Versus mode does let you pit the Lee brothers against each other, and the whole package resurfaced on the 3DS Virtual Console in 2011.

Storyline

In Double Dragon for the Game Boy, players control martial artist Billy Lee (or his twin brother Jimmy in certain modes) as they battle the Black Warriors gang to rescue Billy’s girlfriend Marian. The game is divided into four missions—a city slum, a factory, a forest, and the gang’s hideout. The final stage is filled with traps that lead to a main hall where the boss Willy awaits. The Game Boy version is primarily single‑player; after defeating Willy the game ends, and Jimmy does not appear in the main campaign.
