Summary

Donkey Kong Land 2 builds on the original handheld hit with a banana‑yellow cartridge that instantly signals its tropical roots. The Super Game Boy version adds richer shades of color and a 16‑bit banana border that frames the action on a TV screen, giving the portable experience a subtle nod to its console siblings.

The title resurfaced years later on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console and the Nintendo Classics service, proving its staying power long after its 1996 debut. By 1997 it had moved 1.5 million units worldwide, a testament to Rare’s knack for squeezing a surprisingly deep adventure into the Game Boy’s limited hardware.

Critics praised the side‑scrolling action, hidden areas, and the soundtrack’s charm, with Nintendo Power likening it to a faithful conversion of Donkey Kong Country 2. Some reviewers noted the level design feels too familiar, and Nintendojo called out the save system, but overall the game still earns solid scores—79 % on GameRankings and an 8.5/10 from Nintendojo—highlighting how much content Rare managed to cram into a tiny cartridge.

Storyline

Donkey Kong Land 2 follows Diddy Kong and his sister Dixie as they set out to rescue Donkey Kong from the clutches of Kaptain K. Rool and his Kremling Krew. The game mirrors the plot of its SNES counterpart, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, where K. Rool has kidnapped Donkey Kong on Crocodile Isle and is demanding the entire Banana Hoard as ransom. While the stage names and world themes are borrowed from the original—aside from Castle Crush becoming Dungeon Danger and Haunted Hall turning into Krazy Koaster—the actual level layouts are unique to the Game Boy title.

Along the way, the two monkeys receive help from a quirky cast of animal allies: Rambi the Rhino, Squitter the Spider, Squawks the Parrot, Rattly the Rattlesnake and Enguarde the Swordfish. Each level is packed with hidden items, clever traps and the ever‑present Kremlings, making the rescue mission a lively adventure across the islands.
