Summary
Cool World for Game Boy turns the film into a tight 2D platformer. The handheld version arrived in 1993, following the original 1992 home‑computer release. It’s distinct from the completely different NES and SNES adaptations.
Gameplay centers on Frank Harris balancing a hidden meter for five minutes per stage, or the sarcastic spider "Nails" will announce a failure. Doodles roam each level and can be erased with Frank's pen, turning them into ink blots that drop coins. Those coins are needed to unlock doors and new zones, giving the platforming a light resource‑management twist.
The title uses simple sprites and a chiptune score that nods to the movie’s neon aesthetic, making it a quirky footnote in early '90s handheld libraries.
Storyline
In Cool World for the Game Boy you step into the shoes of Frank Harris, the head of the Cool World police force. His job is to stop the mischievous Doodles—evil cartoon characters—from snatching everyday objects and whisking them into the wacky, animated realm of Cool World. Whenever a stolen item lands in the cartoon zone, Harris must track it down and bring it back to the real world before the balance tips too far. The game tracks this tension with a danger meter that rises whenever too many Doodles roam the real world or too many real‑world items remain trapped in the cartoon. Keep the meter low, and you’ll restore order between the two dimensions.
