Summary

Cliffhanger on the Game Boy drops you straight into a tense rescue mission where you must balance quick jumps with a handful of weapons—ranging from a trusty knife to a side‑arm gun—to clear each scrolling stage. Enemies pop up in predictable patterns, but the real test comes every few levels when a boss blocks your path, culminating in a showdown with Qualen, the terrorist leader. Scattered money bags add a layer of score‑chasing, letting you push the total toward the odd maximum of 958,845 points if you’re meticulous enough. What sets the handheld version apart is its stripped‑down visual style: low‑resolution sprites and a simpler side‑scroll layout that differ sharply from the richer, 16‑bit Malibu Interactive ports on consoles like the SNES. Even among 8‑bit releases, the Spidersoft‑crafted Game Boy and NES versions share this minimalist aesthetic, making every jump and shot feel crisp and urgent.

Storyline

Cliffhanger on the Game Boy drops players into a high‑altitude heist gone wrong. A treasury plane carrying a fortune is attacked by terrorists, and an FBI interceptor shoots it down. The surviving hijackers broadcast a distress call, which the game's protagonist, Gabe, answers, unaware that the mayday is a trap. Once on the scene the terrorists seize Gabe’s partner, Hal, and use him as leverage. Determined to rescue Hal, Gabe must track down the stolen cash and outwit the bandits.
