Summary

Chuck Rock on Game Boy is a side‑scrolling platformer that leans heavily into slap‑stick stone‑age humor. Chuck punches foes with a belly‑buster, follows up with a jump kick, and can hoist rocks to hurl at dinosaurs or stack them as makeshift platforms and shields. The level design mixes simple puzzles with fast‑paced action, letting you ride a brontosaurus or use a crocodile as a seesaw when the environment permits.

The handheld version was programmed by Darren Clayton and tested by Kevin Howe at Spidersoft, building on Core Design’s original concept that grew out of Lee Pullen’s Neanderthal sketches and Tom‑and‑Jerry‑inspired cartoon timing. Matthew Simmonds supplied the quirky, prehistoric‑themed sound effects that give each jump and rock‑throw a satisfying thud.

Critics praised the game’s colorful graphics, humorous animations, and the blend of platforming with light puzzle elements, though some noted sluggish movement and occasional collision‑detection hiccups that made certain sections feel dull. Despite those quirks, Chuck Rock helped cement Core Design’s early mascot status before Lara Croft arrived, spawning a sequel, Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck, and the racing spin‑off BC Racers.

Storyline

The Game Boy version of Chuck Rock drops players into a wildly anachronistic Stone Age world where neanderthals, woolly mammoths, saber‑tooth tigers, dinosaurs and bizarre primeval monsters coexist, much like the backdrops of One Million Years B.C. or The Flintstones. The hero, Chuck Rock, is an overweight, square‑jawed caveman with a punk‑style mohawk, a tiny vocabulary (his catch‑phrase is “Unga Bunga”), a love of raw dinosaur steaks, and a habit of hurling rocks at anything that moves. He also fronts a prehistoric rock band, complete with a long‑haired dinosaur on bass and his attractive wife, Ophelia Rock, who sometimes wears a wig on stage. One day while Chuck is watching TV, Ophelia is knocked out and kidnapped by the jealous bully Garry Gritter, who drags her to his hideout in a creepy dinosaur graveyard. Determined to rescue her, Chuck battles through jungles, swamps, lakes, an icy mountain peak, caves and even the belly of a gigantic dinosaur, confronting the wild creatures of this chaotic era.
