Summary

The Game Boy version of Centipede landed on my shelf in 1992, bringing the classic arcade shooter into my pocket. Accolade’s handheld port kept the familiar bug‑blaster mechanics while slipping in a bright title‑screen melody—something the original arcade never had. Three years later Nintendo re‑issued the cartridge for the Super Game Boy, adding colour palettes and a smoother sound profile that made the mushroom‑filled field feel oddly vibrant. That rerelease also tied the game into Nintendo’s Arcade Classic series, cementing its status as a retro staple. Even without the original trackball, the handheld’s D‑pad proved surprisingly agile for slicing centipede segments and dodging spiders.
The portable edit still packs the same escalating challenge: each destroyed segment becomes a mushroom, each split creates new heads, and occasional fleas, scorpions and poisoned mushrooms keep the gameplay frantic. Extra lives pop up at 12,000 points, rewarding precision shooting in tight spaces. Because of the added audio and colour, the Game Boy’s take on Centipede feels both nostalgic and refreshed, making it a go‑to on long bus rides or rainy evenings.
