Summary
Captain America and the Avengers on Game Boy delivers a surprisingly deep beat ’em‑up experience packed onto the handheld. The game translates the arcade’s side‑scrolling brawler to a portable format, letting you tumble through city streets while swapping punches for laser bursts.
You can pick any of the core team—Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye or Vision—each wielding a unique ranged “Avenger Attack”: a shield throw, arrows, or energy beams that fire at a diagonal angle. When you jump, the two sword‑type heroes deliver flying kicks, while the energy‑users shoot from the air, and occasional power‑up stages let Iron Man and Vision fly freely, with Cap and Hawkeye piloting their own craft. Along the way the Wasp, Quicksilver, Wonder Man and Namor drop in as helpers.
Although the original arcade was a Data East title, Mindscape licensed the cartridge for the 1993 Game Boy version, with Realtime Associates handling the port, preserving the flashy team action for a whole generation of handheld gamers.
Storyline
In the Game Boy title Captain America and the Avengers (often just called Cap and the Avengers), the Red Skull has assembled a massive army of super‑villains and henchmen to seize global control. Players guide Captain America and his fellow Avengers through a series of side‑scrolling stages, fighting generic foot soldiers before confronting a roster of iconic foes. The lineup includes Klaw, the Living Laser, Whirlwind, a Sentinel, the Wizard, the Grim Reaper, the Mandarin, Juggernaut, Ultron, the Controller, and the assassin Crossbones. Each villain presents a distinct challenge that tests the player’s timing and strategy. The climax pits the heroes against the Red Skull himself, bringing the world‑domination plot to a decisive showdown.
