Summary

Blades of Steel still feels like a neon‑lit arcade on a tiny Game Boy screen, thanks to its breakneck skating and the infamous on‑ice brawls that erupt after three consecutive bumps. When a fight kicks off, you control a five‑hit health bar, swapping high and low punches and blocks, and the loser ends up in the penalty box, turning a 5‑on‑5 into a thrilling 5‑on‑4 power play. The game even throws in a shoot‑out after a tie, with each side taking five penalty‑shot attempts until someone finally nets the winner.

The eight fictional squads borrow the colors and city names of real Canadian and American NHL franchises—Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Edmonton, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Minnesota—each fielding three forwards, two defensemen, and a goalie. Between periods, a quirky Konami ad pops up, showcasing a bear slamming a puck and a mini‑game that doubles as a plug for titles like Contra and Gradius. Voice clips such as “Blades of Steel!” and “Fight!” were rare on the NES, giving the handheld version a surprisingly vocal personality.

Critics still praise the title for its pure fun factor; it sold over a million copies and earned a solid 7.5/10 from IGN. The game resurfaced on the Virtual Console in 2007 and later inspired two N‑64/PlayStation sequels, proving that even a 1980s ice‑hockey arcade can skate into modern nostalgia.
