Summary
The Game Boy version of Battle of Olympus feels like a hidden gem from the early ’90s, released only in Europe by Imagineer after Radical Entertainment handled the port. It keeps the original’s side‑scrolling action‑RPG core, letting you swing a sword and raise a shield while hunting for upgrades that boost health, defense, and speed. Unlike Zelda II, there’s no mid‑air downward stab, and the sword’s beam attack only appears later—and even then it costs you health unless you snag a specific item. The game rewards exploration with optional side quests that hand out secret god‑blessed power‑ups. The climax is a two‑part showdown in the Temple of Hades: first a blind duel against a shadowy reflection, then a direct fight with Hades himself, making the final encounter feel both eerie and epic.
Storyline
The Battle of Olympus is set in ancient Greece, where the underworld ruler Hades has seized the land and kidnapped Helene, the lover of the hero Orpheus. A top‑down map guides the player through eight distinct regions—Arcadia, Argolis, Attica, Crete, Laconia, Peloponnes, Phrygia, and Phthia—each containing dungeons and mythic foes.
Orpheus begins armed only with a wooden club, but as he journeys he gathers swords, shields, crystals and three fragments of love that remind him of Helene. By earning the favor of the Olympian gods—starting with Zeus—he receives powerful gear such as the Staff of Fennel (a fire‑ball‑shooting thyrsus), the Nymph’s Sword, the Divine Sword (lightning), the Harp of Apollo (which summons Pegasus), the Sword of Hephaestus, the Staff of Prometheus, and the Sandals of Hermes.
The adventure pits Orpheus against classic monsters like the Taurus, Lamia, cyclops, centaur, Talos, Minotaur, Graeae, Cerberus, Stymphalian birds, Nemean lion and a Siren. After battling through these challenges he descends into Tartarus, confronts Hades and his strongest minions, and ultimately rescues Helene.
