Summary

Batman: Return of the Joker on the Game Boy strips the franchise down to pure platforming. Instead of the run‑and‑gun chaos of the NES counterpart, I guide the Dark Knight through just four tightly designed stages, each ending with a showdown against the Joker. The game leans on the comic‑book version of Batman that emerged after the 1989 film, yet still drops in the iconic Batmobile and Batwing as visual nods. While the NES title let Batman fire a wrist projector loaded with crossbows, Batarangs and more, the handheld version removes the shooting mechanic entirely, forcing you to rely on jumps, slides and timing. The contrast highlights how the portable version focuses on classic side‑scroll action, making every leap feel weightier.

Storyline

In Batman: Return of the Joker for Game Boy, the Dark Knight is summoned by Gotham City after the Joker steals a cache of mysterious metals. Among the loot is a highly toxic substance that the Clown Prince plans to use in missile‑grade explosives. Batman tracks the theft to the Joker’s hidden lair, moving through a series of distinct areas.
The route takes him from the towering Gotham City cathedral down to the Joker’s warehouse, across a snowy mountain, through a refinery, an underground conduit, an ammunition base, and finally the tropical Island of Ha‑Hacienda. Along the way he battles themed bosses such as the Ace Ranger, a mechanical Minedroid, and the refinery’s Master C.P.U. The climax pits Batman directly against the Joker himself.
