Summary

Batman Forever on the Game Boy strips the movie‑based beat ’em up down to its core platform‑fighting roots. You can pick either Batman or Robin, and a separate "training mode" lets you square off as any of the villains against a CPU, a friend, or even two computer opponents at once. The combat relies on move‑list combos and timing‑sensitive key sequences, with gadget attacks triggered by stepping back just before a punch or kick. Each level lets you equip three standard gadgets per hero, choose two more from a rotating pool, and hunt down four hidden "blueprint" gadgets for extra flair.

Unlike the SNES and Genesis versions, the handheld edition drops the puzzle‑solving and the two‑player co‑op modes entirely, opting for a more straightforward brawler experience. Acclaim used motion‑capture tech—originally licensed by Warner Bros—to animate the digitized sprites, a technique reminiscent of Mortal Kombat. Critics slammed the game for clunky controls, sluggish pacing, and lackluster graphics and sound, though a few praised the sprite work. The scores reflect the disappointment, ranging from AllGame’s 1.5/5 on Game Gear to a modest 6.25/10 from EGM, and the title ended up as a commercial flop.
