Summary
Bamse, the Game Boy title starring Sweden’s beloved bear, is essentially a re‑skinned Baby T‑Rex. The game kept the original side‑scroll platform core from Beam Software’s 1993 release, swapping in Bamse sprites, cutscenes and a new title screen for the local market. Though built on Beam’s engine that also powered a Tom and Jerry game, the Swedish version feels out of place – leftover assets and quirky translation slips hint at its borrowed roots. The gameplay is fast‑paced, with standard run‑and‑jump mechanics supplemented by slides and skateboards for extra speed. Players can toss jars of Dunderhonning or bowling balls at foes while hunting health refills and extra lives.
There are four worlds, each comprised of three stages and a concluding boss fight, delivering a compact yet varied progression. Power‑ups appear throughout, keeping the challenge manageable. Released exclusively for Sweden, Bamse received the same average reviews as its worldwide counterpart. Its charm lies in the odd mix of nostalgic platform action and the quirky Swedish cartoon theme.
Storyline
In Bamse on Game Boy, the gentle bear Bamse – known as the world’s strongest bear – teams up with his rabbit pal Lille Skutt. Skalman, the inventive tortoise, has built a time machine and sends the trio 75 million years into the age of dinosaurs.
During the chaotic jump, the mischievous wolf Vargen sneaks aboard, kidnaps Skalman and drags him to his dreaded “doomed castle.” Bamse must battle through prehistoric hazards to rescue his friend, defeat Vargen and return to the present.
