Summary

I still remember flicking through the tiny cartridges of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes on my Game Boy. Though it shares the same cover art as the NES title, this version was a wholly original effort from the UK studio Equilibrium, not a straight port. THQ handled its release in Europe and the United States in 1992, while Japan got a 1993 Altron version. The game plays like many classic platformers: you jump to squash the tomato enemies, sometimes shattering them into even more pesky mini‑tomatoes. Along the way you face a roster of oddly named bosses – Zoltan, Beefstake, Mummato, Fang, Ketchuck and Tomacho – each demanding a different pattern of jumps and squashes. It’s a quirky slice of early‑90s handheld nostalgia that still brings a smile whenever the screen flashes a fresh batch of red foes.

Storyline

In Attack of the Killer Tomatoes for Game Boy, you play as Chad Finletter, a plucky youngster determined to halt the mad Dr. Putrid T. Gangreen. The villain plans to unleash a Doomsday Tomato that would turn the town of San Zucchini into a pulp‑filled nightmare. Chad must battle wave after wave of mutant tomatoes on his own, as the frightened citizens refuse to intervene. The game’s simple yet frantic action pits the boy against endless tomato hordes, each level bringing him closer to confronting Gangreen and destroying the looming Doomsday fruit.
