Summary

Aretha III continues the top‑down fantasy RPG formula that defined its predecessors, offering a familiar yet more polished world to explore. The game, the final entry of the Aretha trilogy, builds on its earlier titles with richer environments and slightly deeper combat mechanics, while keeping the intuitive map navigation that fans loved. Though the same studio, Japan Art Media, and publisher Yanoman were behind the project, it never made it beyond Japan, which explains why it remains a hidden gem for collectors. Its graphics retain the charming 8‑bit aesthetic, but the colour palette feels brighter, giving a fresh look to familiar tilesets. For anyone hunting obscure Game Boy jewels, Aretha III is a rewarding challenge despite its limited exposure.

Storyline

In Aretha III, the warrior Materia, who had twice thwarted Howard’s ambitions, finally enjoys a peaceful life. Doole returns to the Kingdom of Aretha after completing her training, only to discover that the kingdom’s iconic ring has vanished, a loss that seems to bother Materia little. Suddenly, their old acquaintance Ben Marxist appears and proposes a peculiar request: “Are you willing to go to the Kingdom of Aretha 20 years ago?” Moved by thoughts of her unseen parents, Materia agrees, and together with Doole they journey back to the past kingdom of Aretha.
