Summary

The Game Boy version of Alien 3 stands out because Bits Studios – not Probe – handled the port, making it the sole entry in the cross‑platform lineup built by a different team. It also drops the side‑scroll style for a full top‑down perspective, which totally changes how you navigate the prison.

From that overhead view you can jump, shoot, climb ladders, crawl through tight tunnels and even ride elevators. A motion tracker buzzes when an Alien or Facehugger is nearby, and a range of weapons – pulse rifles, flamethrowers and grenades – let you meet them head‑on. Objectives are pulled from computer terminals, showing blueprint layouts, and each level imposes a ticking clock that will drain a life if you linger.

Released in the United States in January 1993, the game earned praise for its gritty soundtrack, while reviewers noted the scarcity of sound effects, the missing password feature, and sluggish controls. Still, the “cinema” scenes were called very effective, giving the handheld a surprising slice of the movie’s tense atmosphere.

Storyline

Alien 3 on the Game Boy puts you in the shoes of Ellen Ripley, the heroine of the film. You navigate the grim corridors of the Fiorina 161 prison colony, exactly as seen in the movie.
The side‑scrolling action challenges you to survive the alien menace while searching for key items and power‑ups. Each level ramps up the tension, culminating in a final showdown with the Alien Queen. Defeating her ends the game and mirrors the movie’s climax.
