Summary
Agro Soar is a side‑scrolling platform game for the Game Boy that recycles the core engine of Beam Software’s Baby T‑Rex. The original game’s code, level design, and music were kept intact while the main character sprite, cut‑scenes, and title screen were swapped to feature the Australian puppet host Agro, fulfilling a regional licensing deal. The adaptation showcases Beam’s practice of re‑skinning existing titles for different markets, an approach that allowed the game to launch without major redesign. Players still navigate the same obstacle‑laden stages, benefiting from the tight controls and catchy soundtrack that defined the original. Reception was mixed, with reviewers noting the competent platforming but questioning the thin veneer of branding. Today it stands as a curious example of early 90s licensed gaming on handhelds.
Storyline
In the Game Boy title Agro Soar, the hero Agro finds himself sucked into a bizarre pre‑historic cartoon that plays on his own television set. The cartoon is controlled by the evil wizard Sethron, who trapped Agro after the bird insulted him while watching the TV show "Curse of Sethron". Now Agro must navigate the primitive animated world, avoid stone‑age hazards, and outwit Sethron’s magic in order to break free and return to his normal reality.
