Summary

Yakouchuu GB feels like a handheld choose‑your‑own‑adventure built for one‑handed play, whether you’re left‑ or right‑handed. The interface is simple: advance text forward or backward, confirm choices when they appear, and press B to summon a cursor that reveals the reading of any obscure kanji on the tiny screen. This “Yomiga‑kun” helper displays the kana pronunciation, making the dense Japanese script surprisingly accessible. After finishing the story once, a fresh start unlocks new narrative branches, letting you explore alternate twists without needing a second cartridge. The port also expands the original’s ending count dramatically, boosting the possible conclusions from 25 to 60 and polishing the scenario with upgraded dialogue and choices.

Storyline

Yakouchuu GB (also known simply as Yakōchū) puts you in the shoes of a player‑named captain who commands the cargo ship Daiana on a six‑month oceanic voyage. Before departure, the captain’s lover sees him off, promising marriage once the journey is complete. On board are a navigator, a mechanic, and a doctor, each essential to the ship’s operation. As the Daiana leaves shore, the crew is beset by a string of misfortunes—paranormal phenomena, raging storms, monster attacks, and even the deaths of crew members. The ocean stretches endlessly, heightening the sense of isolation. Players must investigate a murder that occurs during the trip while making choices that steer the narrative toward one of several possible endings.
