Summary
X‑Men: Mutant Wars on the Game Boy Color plays like a classic side‑scrolling beat ’em‑up, but adds a quirky character‑swap system. You can jump between Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Iceman or Gambit at any point, and the inactive heroes slowly refill their depleted power – a mechanic that forces smart switching for tougher sections. Certain routes demand a specific mutant’s ability, so cycling through the roster becomes essential.
The game throws a variety of bosses at you – from Sabretooth and Sentinels to Magneto and an “Apocalypse II” – and even offers a mode that pits all of them together. Critics praised the surprisingly good soundtrack, but complained about the cramped controls and marathon‑length boss fights. Released to line up with the X‑Men DVD launch, it remains the series’ second handheld outing, followed a year later by Wolverine’s Rage.
Storyline
In X-Men: Mutant Wars for Game Boy Color, a rogue band of cyborgs is wreaking havoc across the planet. The X‑Men suspect Magneto is pulling the strings behind the mechanical menace.
Players can pick from five heroes—Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Iceman, or Gambit—and guide them through a series of missions aimed at stopping the cyborg threat and saving Earth.
