Summary

The Game Boy Color version of X‑Men: Mutant Academy strips the console’s 3‑D stages down to crisp 2‑D backdrops, but it keeps the core fighting spirit alive. You pick from four classic X‑Men—Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm and Gambit—and five notorious villains—Magneto, Toad, Mystique, Sabretooth and Pyro—while two hidden fighters await discovery through secret codes unlocked after clearing the story mode.

Beyond the single‑player story, the cartridge offers a training arena, a three‑character team battle, a brutal survival gauntlet (one health bar only), and a link‑cable versus mode for head‑to‑head duels. Combat is boiled down to two buttons for punches and kicks (or mutant powers like Cyclops’ eye beam), with a slowly filling rage bar that unleashes powerful specials via button combos.

Critics were harsh: the game was called too easy and overly reminiscent of Street Fighter Alpha, though a few reviewers did tip their hats to the surprisingly sharp graphics for a handheld title.
