Summary
Woody Woodpecker Racing manages to pack a surprisingly deep kart‑racing experience into the tiny Game Boy Color cartridge. From an overhead isometric view you can choose from ten cartoon critters, each driving a kart that can be tuned for speed, acceleration or grip by swapping out engines, tires and even jump parts earned through cup victories. The game’s four modes—Extreme, Grand Prix, Sprint and Time Attack—keep things fresh: Extreme pits you against five AI opponents in a knockout‑style cup, while Grand Prix tallies points across a series of races, and the single‑race options let you practice or chase the fastest lap.
Tracks are peppered with ramps, speed‑boost panels and a quirky mix of power‑ups, from homing missiles to temporary invincibility potions, and the Ghost‑lap feature lets you trade replay data via the Link Cable for extra competition. Unlockable characters like Chilly Willy and Dapper Denver Dooley appear after you prove yourself in the various cups, adding a nice sense of progression.
Critics were split: some praised the game’s polish, mode variety and the way it revived kart racing on a handheld, while others complained about its sluggish early‑race pacing and AI quirks that sometimes felt unfair. Still, the colorful sprites, expressive heads and clear track visuals give the title a charm that makes it stand out among its portable peers.
