Summary

Trapped inside a magical music box, the invincible Wario embarks on a sprawling quest across more than two dozen gigantic levels. The overworld is split into four quadrants—East, West, North, and South—housing 25 distinct stages, each hiding four colored treasure chests that require matching keys. By exploiting enemy attacks—like swallowing a donut to bulk up—Wario gains temporary powers that let him smash blocks and reach otherwise inaccessible areas, often forcing a backtrack to retrieve a new item.

Time alternates between day and night each time Wario exits a stage, reshaping enemy patterns and opening fresh pathways. Hidden throughout are eight Music Coins per level, and regular coins fuel a quirky golfing minigame where players must sink enemies in under‑par shots. Wario cannot die, save for a capture by the final boss Rudy the Clown, which sends him back to the music box overworld.

Storyline

In Wario Land 3, Wario’s plane runs out of fuel and crashes in a forest, leaving him unharmed but wandering until he finds a mysterious cave. Inside, he discovers a magical music box that suddenly pulls him inside. A mysterious figure tells him he once ruled the world inside the music box, but an evil being sealed his powers across five scattered music boxes.

Enticed by the promise of returning home with any treasure he can collect, Wario sets out to retrieve the five music boxes. The figure promises to send Wario back to his own world once the boxes are gathered, allowing him to keep whatever loot he finds along the way.

After gathering all five, Wario returns to the figure’s temple, where the boxes play a medley that frees the being—revealed to be Rudy the Clown, the true villain. The monsters Wario fought were the music box’s inhabitants transformed by Rudy’s magic. Defeating Rudy, Wario is thanked by the restored inhabitants, who transport him home with his treasure, just as promised.
