Summary

Triple Play 2001 landed on the Game Boy Color as the handheld’s sole entry in EA Sports’ baseball line‑up. While the series had finally pushed its predecessor to a smooth 30 FPS, this portable version slipped back, drawing sharp criticism for its choppy frame rate. The game does, however, sprinkle in a nostalgic touch by letting you step into the shoes of classic players, a feature that feels like a nod to longtime fans.

Gameplay options are surprisingly robust for a GBC title: you can dive into a single‑player match, grind through a full season, battle it out in the playoffs, or swing for the fences in a Home Run Derby. Team selection and even player transfers sit in your hands, giving a taste of managerial control that’s rare on a handheld. All of this is narrated by the familiar voices of Jim Hughson and Buck Martinez, whose commentary adds a professional polish.

Unlike earlier installments, Triple Play 2001 never made it to the Nintendo 64, and it remains the only version with an official release date for the Game Boy Color, marking a unique footnote in the franchise’s history.
