Summary

Tonic Trouble on the Game Boy Color reimagines the original 3‑D adventure as a tight, side‑scrolling platformer that never made it to the United States, staying Europe‑only. The conversion strips the world down to classic 2‑D action, letting you guide janitor Ed through six distinct stages filled with pits, falling platforms, poison‑spitting holes and a parade of mutated foes. Ed’s arsenal expands as you progress: a peashooter that switches to a first‑person view, a bow‑tie for short‑range flight, a diving helmet for underwater sections, a cloaking belt that mimics enemies, and a pogo stick for lava‑filled jumps, plus a popcorn‑powered Super Ed form for extra melee. Collecting thermometers boosts health, while red orbs, bonus spheres and hidden items unlock power‑ups and a secret level. The game also taps Ubisoft’s “Ubi Key” infrared system, allowing data swaps with other Ubisoft GBC titles to reveal extra content, and it earned mixed reviews that praised its controls, music and level design despite noting its derivative feel.

Storyline

Tonic Trouble follows Ed, a purple alien janitor who accidentally spills a mysterious liquid onto Earth, turning the planet’s rivers and wildlife into mutating chaos. Agent XYZ, the resistance leader, tasks Ed with retrieving the container so an antidote can be made, while the drunk villain Grögh (sometimes called Grock) exploits the tonic’s power to seize control. Ed teams up with the inventor Doc and his daughter Suzy, gathers missing parts for a catapult, defeats the enemy Magic Mushroom, and is launched into Grögh’s Castle where he finally reclaims the toxic container and restores the world.
