Summary

Test Drive 6 on the Game Boy Color feels like a pocket‑sized homage to the arcade racers of the late ’90s. Developed by the tiny studio Xantera, the game arrives in a sleek black cartridge and packs a surprisingly deep experience for a handheld. You can choose from 12 licensed sports and muscle cars and tear through 24 tracks that borrow their names from real‑world cities, giving each race a hint of globe‑trotting flair.

The career‑style "Race Menu" lets you wager in‑game cash on tournament events, gradually unlocking faster rides as you climb the tiers. A separate Cop Chase mode flips the script, letting you hop behind a police cruiser and give rogue racers a taste of the siren. All of your hard‑earned trophies and collected cars are displayed in a neat Test Drive Custom Garage, so you can brag about your collection even when the console is off.

Even though the handheld version is essentially a clone of the classic RC Pro Am formula, it retains the series’ signature high‑octane feel. A year later, Xantera followed up with a GBC‑only sequel, Test Drive 2001, keeping the fast‑lane fun alive for anyone who still loved squeezing speed out of a tiny screen.
