Summary
The Game Boy Color version of Super Breakout brings the classic brick‑smashing action to a handheld with surprisingly faithful depth. All three arcade modes survive: Double lets you juggle two paddles and two balls at once, Cavity hides extra balls in pockets that burst free when you clear the right bricks, and Progressive pushes the wall down step by step, speeding up as the ball ricochets. Even on the tiny screen the dual‑paddle control feels tight, and the extra‑ball mechanics add a strategic layer that the original arcade rarely showcased.
Visually the game stays true to its 1978 roots, using a monochrome display overlaid with colored filters, while the brick graphics are sculpted in the style popularized by Arkanoid. Majesco’s 1999 release packs this retro experience into a cartridge that fits right in your pocket, proving that a simple paddle‑and‑ball formula can still feel fresh on modern hardware.
Storyline
In 1982, John Braden recorded a seven‑inch, 33⅓ RPM record for Kid Stuff Records that tells the science‑fiction tale behind Super Breakout. The narrative follows NASA astronaut Captain John Stewart Chang, who is returning from a routine mission ferrying titanium ore from Io to the space station New California.
During his flight, Chang encounters a mysterious rainbow barrier that stretches infinitely in both directions. Armed with three white‑light missiles that he can ricochet off his shuttle’s hull, he discovers they can pierce the barrier’s layers. As his life‑support systems begin to fail, the struggle turns into a test of endurance, turning the desperate attempt to breach the force field into a game‑like challenge.
The story frames the classic brick‑busting action of Super Breakout as an interstellar test of skill and perseverance.
