Summary
The Game Boy Color port of Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams landed in 1999, courtesy of Crawfish Interactive’s hand‑tuned conversion. While the arcade’s three‑level Super Combo gauge, Alpha Counters and Auto‑guard options survive in spirit, the handheld version pares the visuals down to fit the portable screen and trims the sound to the GBC’s modest channel set. It’s a strictly single‑player experience—no link‑cable battles—so you face the same rotating roster of seven random foes plus a story‑based final opponent. Hidden rivals such as Akuma and the joke‑character Dan are still accessible via secret inputs, preserving the arcade’s surprise factor. The Japanese cartridge bears the Alpha name instead of Zero, echoing regional branding quirks. Despite the downgrade, the version manages to capture the fast‑paced combos and unique moves like air‑blocking that made the original a fan favorite.
Storyline
Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams (often just called Street Fighter Alpha) is set before the events of Street Fighter II, showing younger versions of the series’ heroes and bringing in fighters from the original Street Fighter and Final Fight games. The single‑player campaign tailors its ending to each character: half of the roster faces M. Bison as the final boss, while a hidden showdown with Akuma unlocks only after meeting specific in‑game conditions, and the parody character Dan can appear as a challenger under his own criteria. A special secret mode, Dramatic Battle, reenacts the iconic clash between Ryu, Ken and M. Bison that was featured in the Street Fighter II animated movie, giving players a nostalgic glimpse of that climactic moment.
