Summary
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere brings a full‑scale action RPG experience to the Game Boy Color, packing top‑down field exploration, side‑view battles, and a photo‑capture compendium into a single 4 MB cartridge. Even with a modest system, the title features a real‑time battle system where three party members face a single foe, targeting individual body parts and triggering character‑specific finishing moves. Skill Points earned in combat fill a shared pool, letting you raise stats, unlock new abilities, and fuel the Create Feats forging system that produces swords, restores, and other gear.
The game supports up to twelve playable characters, includes "Private Actions" to deepen relationships, and offers link‑cable multiplayer for battling or trading items. Developed by the core tri‑Ace team, it reunites composer Motoi Sakuraba and manga‑artist Mayumi Azuma, despite grueling development that left programmers exhausted. Though it stayed Japan‑only, it sold about 130,000 copies and is praised for squeezing deep mechanics into a handheld format.
Storyline
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere takes place two years after The Second Story, in S.D. 368 (A.D. 2454) on the primitive world Edifice. The planet is stuck in a pre‑spaceflight era but still holds ruins of a once‑advanced civilization. An unknown force drags the main cast from the previous game onto Edifice, forcing them to uncover its source and find a way off. Claude, Rena, Leon and Precis have settled on Earth, while Ashton, Celine, Dias, Noel, Chisato and Bowman remain on Expel. Ernest and Opera are treasure hunting when their ship crashes on Edifice; Opera sends an SOS to Precis, who gathers the others (except Claude and Rena, on a Federation mission) in her self‑built ship and is also pulled down.
The group explores the alien landscape, searching for the missing comrades and the mysterious pull that keeps them grounded. Along the way they encounter remnants of the ancient tech and battle native creatures, all while trying to repair their vessels. Their ultimate goal is to locate Claude and Rena and escape the planet before the unknown force claims them all.
