Summary
Seeing SpongeBob Squarepants: Legend of the Lost Spatula on my Game Boy Color felt like a neon‑bright deep‑sea arcade. The game drops you into eleven side‑scrolling stages where you juggle goofy weapons and tools to blast past the series’ quirky foes. Familiar faces show up as you jump — Mr. Krabs trades cash for secret items, Squidward sulks through platform sections, and Sandy’s gadgets open hidden paths. Colorful cutscenes break up the action, and a password screen lets you pick up exactly where you left off, giving the trek a satisfying collect‑and‑continue vibe. It even caps the run with four boss battles, making this first handheld SpongeBob title a memorable single‑player punch for any GBC fan.
Storyline
While riding his bike, SpongeBob stumbles upon a mysterious statue whose base looks like a stove. He tells Mr. Krabs, who explains that the monument honors a legendary fry‑cook who once wielded a golden spatula hidden in the ruins of a collapsed civilization now ruled by the Flying Dutchman. Krabs pushes SpongeBob to retrieve the spatula, hoping for a fortune.
SpongeBob sets out to locate the missing stove dials scattered across the island; each dial unlocks another part of the statue’s secret. After gathering every dial, he activates the base, opening a portal into the Flying Dutchman's domain.
Inside, the Dutchman challenges him, but SpongeBob defeats the ghostly pirate and claims the golden spatula. He returns to the Krusty Krab, uses the magical utensil to churn out endless Krabby Patties, and Mr. Krabs cashes in on the massive profit.
