Summary

The Smurfs' Nightmare, sometimes referred to simply as The Smurfs 3, is a 2D platform adventure that landed on Nintendo’s handhelds in the late‑90s. I first saw it on the original Game Boy, and later on the Game Boy Color, where the brighter palette let the little blue heroes pop against the night‑time backdrops.

Even though the premise is simple—guide the Smurfs through a series of side‑scrolling challenges—the game feels surprisingly tight for its hardware. Velez and Dubail’s level design makes each stage feel distinct, while Infogrames’ publishing ensured the title reached both European and North American audiences. The result is a nostalgic platformer that still holds a quirky charm for anyone who enjoys retro handheld gems.

Storyline

In Smurfs Nightmare for the Game Boy Color, a full‑moon night turns disastrous when the evil Gargamel casts a spell that drags every sleeping Smurf into their own worst nightmare. Only Hefty Smurf remains untouched, and he rallies the player to become Brave Smurf and venture into the villagers’ homes. Each house becomes a twisted, nightmarish realm where the trapped Smurfs must be rescued. By navigating these bizarre worlds, the player works to break Gargamel’s curse and free the Smurfs from their terrifying dreams. The fate of the entire Smurf village hangs on the success of this daring rescue mission.
