Pumuckls Abenteuer im Geisterschloss
2000 Puzzle
Shadowgate Classic brings the original 1987 point‑and‑click adventure to the Game Boy Color with surprisingly crisp sprites and smooth animations. You step into the shoes of the last heir of a forgotten royal line, tasked with navigating the labyrinthine halls of Castle Shadowgate while keeping a torch alight—a simple mechanic that adds constant tension. The game’s core loop revolves around rummaging through rooms, collecting essential items like a sword, sling, and various keys, then using them to bypass deadly traps and solve riddles that block your progress. Frequent saving is a must, as a single misstep can end your quest in an instant, reinforcing the careful, methodical feel that made the original so memorable. Despite the handheld format, the port retains the eerie atmosphere and brain‑teasing puzzles that define the Shadowgate experience.
The adventure opens with the hero standing before Castle Shadowgate, recalling his mission from wizard Lakmir to stop the Warlock Lord before the dark sorcerer can raise the Behemoth and doom the world. Inside the castle the player navigates puzzles, avoids traps, and battles monsters while gathering three sacred artifacts that combine into the Staff of Ages, a holy weapon meant to defeat the Warlock Lord. In the final chamber the Warlock Lord is about to open the gates of Hell and summon the Behemoth. The hero assembles the Staff, wounds the Behemoth, and as the creature dies it drags the Warlock Lord into Hell. Victorious, the protagonist is betrothed to the king’s daughter and named High Lord of the Westland.
