Summary

When Capcom first eyed a Game Boy Color version of Resident Evil, they handed the job to the UK studio HotGen. The plan was an Autumn 1999 launch, but stubborn hardware limits turned the project into a marathon of debugging and re‑coding. By March 2000 the effort was shelved in favor of a clean‑room title, Resident Evil: Gaiden, which was built from scratch for the handheld.

Even though the unfinished build never saw an official release, it survived in the shadowy corners of the internet. A 2012 auction claimed an EPROM cartridge, and a leaked ROM followed weeks later. The hype grew until 2025 when a near‑complete GBC build finally emerged, sparking excitement among collectors who marvel at how the game managed to reproduce every room, cutscene and almost all items from the original PlayStation adventure despite the modest cartridge.

Storyline

In Resident Evil for the Game Boy Color, the Bravo Team of Raccoon City S.T.A.R.S. disappears while investigating cannibalistic murders in Arklay forest. Alpha Team—Chris, Jill, Barry, Frost, Vickers and Wesker—are dispatched, find the crashed helicopter and are attacked by Dobermanns; Joseph is killed and Brad escapes in his chopper. The survivors seek shelter in a mysterious mansion that hides Umbrella’s secret laboratory.

Inside, members are picked off: a Bravo teammate is devoured, a crow‑infested forest kills Forest Speyer, a mutated snake bites Richard Aiken, and Captain Marini is shot. Wesker is revealed as Umbrella’s mole, blackmailing Barry. The prototype Tyrant is unleashed, killing Wesker before turning on the player. Collecting MO‑disks lets you free the partner (Barry for Jill, Rebecca for Chris) and trigger the mansion’s self‑destruct. After a final showdown with the Tyrant—helped by a rocket‑launcher dropped by Brad—all survivors escape by helicopter. The ending varies with partner survival, but canonically Chris, Jill, Barry and Rebecca live as the mansion explodes.
