Summary
Rainbow Islands for the Game Boy Color lets you slip back into the world of Bubby and Bobby, the tiny human versions of Bubble Bobble’s dinosaurs, for a vibrant two‑player run. You spray rainbows like makeshift platforms and weapons, racing the ever‑rising sea while snagging power‑ups that speed you up and boost the rainbow trail. Each of the ten themed islands packs four stages, and hidden treasures—small colored diamonds that form a larger gem when collected in order—unlock secret rooms with permanent upgrades. A special nod to the NES‑era version appears as the KiKi Kaikai island, tucked away as a secret location only discovered by the most diligent explorers. With multiple endings tied to how many diamonds you gather, the GBC version feels like a fresh puzzle‑platformer wrapped in nostalgic bubble‑dragon charm.
Storyline
Rainbow Islands (the Game Boy Color version) picks up right after Bubble Bobble. Bubby and Bobby, now transformed into human kids, learn that the Dark Shadow— the same force behind the chaos in Bubble Bobble— has taken over the Rainbow Islands. Determined to rescue the islands and stop the Shadow, the brothers embark on a ten‑stage trek, each island sporting its own visual theme. The gameplay revolves around climbing to the top of each stage while blasting enemies with rainbow‑colored attacks. By the end of the chain of islands, the duo hopes to defeat the Dark Shadow and restore peace to the rainbow‑filled world.
