Summary

R-Type DX on the Game Boy Color feels like a mini‑arcade in my pocket, packing five classic shooters into a single cartridge. The collection bundles the original R‑Type I and II, color‑enhanced versions for the GBC, and the brand‑new DX stage that adds fresh enemies and level layouts. Gameplay stays true to the franchise’s tunnel‑shooting formula, letting me swing the iconic Fire Chain, unleash the Super Laser and clear swarms with the Bubble Beam. Two rapid‑fire modes crank the pace up when the Bydo hordes get intense. The handheld’s palette pops thanks to the GBC’s color boost, turning the grayscale backdrop into vibrant blues and oranges while preserving the tight controls I love.

Storyline

R-Type DX drops you into a desperate mission for the World Government. A deep‑space probe has intercepted the Bydo Empire’s hidden plans to launch a massive assault on Earth. Sending a full fleet would instantly trigger the Empire’s long‑range scanners, ruining any element of surprise. Instead, the government counts on a single pilot in a lone R‑type fighter to slip through the Bydo defenses. Your goal is to break through the alien fortifications, cripple the enemy and destroy the Bydo before the attack can begin.
