Summary

Quest RPG: Brian's Journey lands on the Game Boy Color as a compact spin‑off of the Nintendo 64’s Quest 64, rebranded for the handheld market. The North American release from Sunsoft carries the same name on its title screen, while the original Japanese version appeared under a much longer banner from Imagineer.

The game sticks to an overhead view of Brian, but its turn‑based combat adds a surprising twist: you can shift your character between enemy attacks to dodge, and you can mash elemental spells together for combo moves. Leveling up four elemental skills feels straightforward, yet the spell‑mixing gives each encounter a bit of strategic flair.

As a demake, it mirrors the core premise of its console sibling—an unlikely hero on a grand quest—but the handheld format forces the RPG elements into a more streamlined package.

Critics were split; IGN gave it a 4/10, praising the inventive battle system while lambasting the story as bland and the RPG depth as overly simplified. The mixed reception reflects the challenge of squeezing a full‑blown adventure into a tiny cartridge.

Storyline

Set in the fantastical medieval realm of Celtland – a world that feels like an enchanted version of Ireland – Quest RPG: Brian's Journey follows apprentice mage Brian. He leaves his quiet monastery to track down his missing father, only to discover his dad is hunting a thief who stole the mysterious "Eletale Book." Along the way Brian must gather elemental amulets, each guarded by powerful criminals, which are crucial for confronting the final boss.

Brian’s hometown is a peaceful, sleepy village until hordes of evildoers descend and threaten its calm. The townsfolk look to Brian to embark on a quest that will restore harmony, and perhaps even save the wider world, by retrieving the stolen book and the hoarded amulets.
