Summary

Pop'n Pop first dazzled arcade crowds in early 1998, borrowing the bright cast of Taito’s own Rainbow Islands, Kiki Kaikai, Don Doko Don and The New Zealand Story. Its playfield feels like a mash‑up of Puzzle Bobble’s bubble‑matching, Arkanoid’s brick‑breaking and Space Invaders’ descending rows, as coloured balloons drift downward and you fire your own balloons to line up triples. When the GBC version arrived, Taito padded the roster with extra faces—Bubblun from Bubble Symphony, Ptolemy of The Fairyland Story, Chack’n, Hipopo and even the mischievous Drunk—letting players pick up a fresh roster straight from the company’s arcade legacy. The North American release took a whimsical turn, re‑branding the title as Yogi Bear: Great Balloon Blast, swapping in Yogi, Boo‑Boo and Cindy Bear and relocating the action to Jellystone Park. That edition also added link‑cable support, so friends could battle each other’s balloon‑clearing skills on the Game Boy Color.
