Summary

When I first saw NBA In The Zone on the Game Boy Color, I was instantly reminded of the broader Konami series that spanned PlayStation and N64. The franchise, known as NBA Power Dunkers in Japan and NBA Pro in Europe and Australia, built its reputation on yearly releases that kept the rosters fresh. By the late ’90s the covers featured real NBA stars like Glen Rice and later Marcus Camby, even though the games still used generic names for legends such as Michael Jordan.

What set the series apart was its surprisingly deep mode list for a handheld. You could assemble a full season, dive into playoffs, or just jump into an exhibition, and the Game Boy version even supported up to eight players via link cable. Create‑a‑player tools let you craft your own dunker, while the console versions added a national anthem before each match and, in the 2000 edition, Ray Clay’s iconic PA‑voice commentary.

The later titles, especially NBA In The Zone 2000, pushed realism with motion‑captured animation and introduced side events like a slam‑dunk contest and a three‑point shootout, giving the series an arcade flair that still feels nostalgic today.
