Summary

Momotarou Densetsu II on the Game Boy Color feels like a single adventure split across two cartridges, stitched together into one seamless story. The game introduces a quirky “Time capsule” mechanic that lets you boost Momotaro’s status after confronting Enma the Great, and even retrieve a lost tool from a well mid‑journey. I’m especially fond of the Point Card System – every purchase earns points you can spend later, turning the shop into a little reward loop. Collecting the Oni Zukan cards adds a nice album‑style completion goal, while the Kyukei command lets you drop a temporary save anywhere, a lifesaver for those long exploration stretches. The auto‑mapping feature draws the current map on demand, so I never get lost in the sprawling world. It even got a budget re‑release on July 31 2001, making this quirky GBC classic even more accessible.

Storyline

Momotarou Densetsu 1-2 opens with a fairy‑tale origin: Momotaro is born from a peach, lovingly raised by his grandfather and grandmother, and grows up quickly. When oni from Onigashima begin raiding villages, Momotaro sets out with his loyal companions—a dog, a monkey and a pheasant—to confront the threat. They reach Onigashima, where the fearsome Enma the Great awaits, and after a hard‑fought battle Momotaro defeats the oni, restoring peace to the countryside. Three years later, a new menace emerges: a hell king who dwells deeper than Enma. Undeterred, Momotaro embarks on another quest, gathering encouraging friends along the way to challenge this darker foe and strive for peace once more.
