Summary

Metamode is a quirky action‑RPG that lands you in a bright, sprite‑laden Game Boy Color world where peace depends on shapeshifting. You enlist in the Keibi‑tai, a kind of peacekeeping squad, and the titular Metamode device becomes your secret weapon: activate it and you can swap between a ranger, a mage, a blacksmith, even a thief‑type, each with its own combat flair. Battles play out on a simple grid, but the real strategy lies in swapping roles at just the right moment to exploit enemy weaknesses. Between fights, townsfolk dispense hints and side quests that expand the lore of a world trying to dodge an imminent upheaval. Though its graphics are modest, the variety of forms and the seamless mode‑switching keep the gameplay feeling fresh, turning a handheld RPG into a playful puzzle of when to become what.

Storyline

In Metamode, humans share their world with a variety of monsters, but the creatures aren’t always friendly. To keep the peace, a device called the Metamode was invented—it can stun a monster without killing it. People trained to wield the tool formed a security force known as the Keibi‑tai, tasked with protecting civilians from rogue beasts. As the Metamode spread globally, the Keibi‑tai rebranded themselves as the Cools, a modern peace‑keeping squad. The game follows a hopeful recruit who must pass a rigorous exam to earn a spot in the Cools and help maintain the fragile balance between humans and monsters.
