Summary

Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, released outside Japan under the simpler name Metal Gear Solid, feels like a love letter to the series’ 2‑D roots while sneaking in a few of the PlayStation‑era tricks we all adore. Instead of re‑hashing the console hit, Konami’s European team asked the developers to craft an original story set seven years after the 1987 MSX2 classic, giving us an alternate sequel that never touches the main canon. The overhead view mirrors Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, but you can now flatten Snake against walls, peek around corners, or even knock to lure guards—small touches that make the GBC’s limited screen feel surprisingly alive. Movement is truly eight‑directional, and the start button lets you crawl, while weapon swaps happen on the main screen. The Codec doubles as a save system, and after each of the 13 stages you get a performance grade. Bonus modes like Stage Select with its mysterious “No. 4” overseer, a 180‑mission VR Training suite, and a two‑player Link‑Cable battle round out the experience, earning it a near‑perfect 95.61% on GameRankings and a spot in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2.

Storyline

Metal Gear Solid (Game Boy Color) opens in the early 21st century when a prototype bipedal armored vehicle, codenamed Gander, is seized along with its nuclear payload by an armed group. The crisis forces the U.S. government to recall Solid Snake, the legendary saboteur who toppled Outer Heaven seven years earlier, pulling him out of retirement in Alaska.

The stolen Metal Gear is in the hands of the Gindra Liberation Front, a separatist guerrilla faction operating in Central Africa’s Gindra region. Led by mercenary Augustine Eguabon, the GLF plans to use the weapon to win a civil war and has taken refuge in Galuade, the former Outer Heaven fortress. Snake’s mission is to infiltrate the stronghold, where he allies with Sgt. Christine Jenner, a surviving Delta Force operative sent ahead to retrieve Gander.

Inside Galuade, Snake confronts four members of the defunct Black Chamber, each bearing animal‑themed codenames. Black Arts Viper, a booby‑trap specialist with a prosthetic arm, leads Slasher Hawk (an Aboriginal warrior with giant boomerangs and a hawk companion), Marionette Owl (a former serial killer with nocturnal vision and puppet weapons), and Pyro Bison (a pyromaniac wielding a flamethrower). As he defeats each foe, Snake uncovers a deeper conspiracy linking the GLF to the U.S. government.

Beyond the main campaign, the game’s Special Training mode features a mysterious entity called “No. 4” that reveals hidden story details. A bonus 13‑part satirical tale, IdeaSpy 2.5, can be accessed via the CODEC screen (frequency 140.07) and follows an FBI task force battling the nefarious J.E. Corporation.
