Summary
The Mask of Zorro on Game Boy Color drops you into a side‑scrolling adventure that spans roughly thirty stages, from dusty mines to ornate churches and sprawling mansions. You wield Zorro’s blade with thrusts, slashes and parries, and even swing across posts, while a Spanish‑guitar soundtrack tries to transport you to 1820s California. Health is a quirky mix of classic hearts and the occasional kiss from Elena, which instantly patches up Zorro’s wounds. Unfortunately, the game’s charm is constantly undercut by clumsy controls: jumps feel awkward, collision detection is unreliable, and enemies can feel unfairly tough. Critics across the board called it a frustrating, poorly executed licensed title, and even the graphics were described as sub‑par, making the experience more of a lesson in what not to do with a handheld adaptation.
Storyline
Mask of Zorro (the Game Boy Color version) follows the film’s plot, setting the adventure in 1821 California. The people are under threat from the sly and evil Don Rafael Montero, who has devised a scheme to take control of the region.
The player controls Zorro and his protégé Alejandro Murrieta as they fight to defeat Don Rafael and free the people of California from his rule.
