Summary
Magical Chase GB: Minarai Mahoutsukai Kenja no Tani e is a Game Boy Color port that keeps the original’s horizontal scrolling and parallax background, though the graphics are a bit more modest and the music is simplified for the handheld. Throughout each stage a floating shop run by a pumpkin‑styled girl appears, letting you spend collected coins on a surprisingly deep arsenal. You can buy nine different magic attacks for Ripple—rapid shot, triple shot, scatter shot, bouncing rings, wave beams, bubbles, homing shots, plus special spells, a speed regulator, health items, and elixels—plus a handful of RPG‑style items.
The game offers two easy‑to‑grasp difficulty levels, but the toughest setting from the arcade version never made it onto the cartridge; instead, hint screens were added to guide players. The shop vanishes on the final stage, adding a subtle shift in pacing.
Because it never saw an official Western release, the GBC edition is a collector’s gem, often fetching high prices on the secondary market. An English fan translation by Gaijin Productions appeared in 2001, giving non‑Japanese speakers a chance to experience its quirky magic‑shop mechanics and charming shooter action.
Storyline
Magical Chase GB – Minarai Mahoutsukai Kenja no Tani e follows Ripple, a mischievous apprentice witch at a magic school. When her teacher asks her to stay alone at the school, Ripple breaks the promise and opens a forbidden tome called Sleeping Demons, unintentionally unleashing several sealed demons into the world.
Fearing her teacher will turn her into a frog for disobeying, she teams up with her star‑maiden friends Topsy and Turvy. The trio sets out on a quest to recapture the escaped demons and seal them back inside the book. Their adventure blends classic platforming with a light‑hearted magical narrative.
