Summary

Lufia: The Legend Returns, the third entry in the Lufia saga, finally made its way to the Game Boy Color, becoming the series’ first handheld adventure. The game sticks to classic turn‑based RPG roots with random battles, but it introduces the series’ IP System: abilities are learned from hidden Ancient Texts and fueled by four kinds of Spiritual Force rather than gear. On the Battle Screen up to nine characters can join a fight, yet only three attacks occur each turn—one per column—so positioning the party in front or back rows is crucial for damage balance. Between rounds you can shuffle the lineup, letting the higher‑damage front line strike while the rear protect weaker members.
Explorers will recognize the infamous Ancient Cave, now a 200‑floor, procedurally generated maze that tests endurance. The overworld is sprawling, with peaceful towns and hazard‑laden paths linking diverse regions. Development was tumultuous: the project began as Lufia III: Ruins Chaser under Nihon‑Flex, collapsed, and was rescued by Neverland, who trimmed the graphics and rewrote the story. Critics gave the title mixed reviews—praise for its innovative party mechanics was offset by complaints about cumbersome menus.

Storyline

Lufia: The Legend Returns takes place a century after the Doom Island Wars that ended the first two Lufia games and two centuries after Lufia II. The teenage protagonist Wain, a descendant of the legendary hero Maxim, meets the fortune‑teller Seena, who asks him to investigate a sudden blaze at the Tower of Death. The fire awakens Gades, the weakest of the four Sinistrals, and the duo sets out to stop the revived evil.

Traveling north, they aid the wealthy merchant Fugo, rescue the thief Dei from his underground prison, and later join Aima, a Jigen‑Ryu fighter whose temple has been seized by the Garland Gang. Each encounter ends with Gades crushing the town—first Fugo’s summer house, then the port city Siantao—forcing the group to grow stronger.

With the new allies, Wain, Seena, Dei and Aima return to the Tower of Death and finally defeat Gades. Their victory reveals that three more Sinistrals still threaten the world, and the heroes resolve to seal them and save the continents.
