Summary

Koto Battle: Tengai no Moribito—sometimes just called Koto Battle—marks AlphaDream’s debut on the Game Boy Color, arriving in Japan on March 9 2001. The title turns RPG progression into a tactical card duel, where you assemble a hand of twenty kotodama cards and draw four each turn. By playing monster cards you summon up to three allies that sit in designated slots on the screen, shielding you and attacking when their time‑cost hits zero. Items can’t be used directly, but they equip your summoned creatures, offering buffs or strange side effects like reduced attack power. Magic cards provide modest offense and valuable healing, while the real twist comes from the kanji‑based “Kotodama history” that records recent plays; combining the recorded symbols can birth powerful combo cards that feel like unlocking hidden spells. Escape is only possible against random encounters, and running out of kotodamas ends the fight even with HP left. Famitsu gave it a solid 31 / 40 on release, a respectable nod for a niche Japanese‑only experiment.

Storyline

Koto Battle: Tengai no Moribito takes place in a world ruled by the mysterious power called kotodama. Ages ago the ki (spiritual energy) kotodama erupted in the land of Tengai, unleashing chaos across the realm. Five other kotodama elements united to seal the rogue ki, preventing total destruction. The sealed elements scattered, and shaman women known as miko continued to guard the world using the ten (heaven) kotodama.

Players assume the role of a young kotodama battler in training, the younger brother of a miko. He wields the hito (person) kotodama and aspires to become a moribito, the elite defenders tasked with protecting the shamans. Throughout the adventure he must master his element while confronting remnants of the chaotic ki. The story blends mythic Japanese motifs with a quest to safeguard the balance of the five remaining kotodama.
