Summary

The Game Boy Color adaptation of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine arrived in early 2001 as a 2D top‑down adventure crafted by HotGen. While it rides on the same 1999 LucasArts franchise, the handheld version swaps the original’s 3D feel for sprite‑based exploration and whip‑centric combat. Players dash through varied locales, solving environmental puzzles and battling foes with Indy’s iconic whip, all while navigating a fast‑paced action loop that rewards quick reflexes. Critics noted the title’s polished animations and crisp sound effects, and praised its intricate level layouts, yet they also flagged the clunky control scheme, frequent backtracking, sparse puzzle hints, and the frustration of restarting a level after a single death. The mandatory instruction manual and password‑based save system added extra hurdles, but overall the handheld version earned generally favorable reviews for delivering a surprisingly deep Indiana Jones experience on a portable platform.

Storyline

The 1999 Game Boy Color title *Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine* drops players into 1947, when the famed archaeologist has just finished his World War II service and returned to digging. CIA operative Sophia Hapgood arrives at his Canyonlands dig and warns him that Soviet scientists, led by physicist Dr. Gennadi Volodnikov, are excavating Babylon in search of a weapon that could out‑shine the nuclear bomb.

Jones is hired to uncover the Soviets’ true goal and travels to Iraq, where he meets Sophia’s boss Simon Turner. The trio learns that Volodnikov seeks the Babylonian god Marduk, who dwells in a parallel plane called the Aetherium, and that four fragments of an ancient "Infernal Machine" lie scattered across the globe. The pieces are hidden in a Kazakh monastery, a volcanic island in the Philippines, an Olmec valley in Mexico, and a tomb near Meroë in Sudan.

After retrieving the parts, Jones hands them to Sophia and Turner, while Volodnikov watches with cautious curiosity. Turner attempts to use the machine to open a portal to the Aetherium, imprisoning Sophia in a mystical cage; Jones is forced to kill Turner and activate the engine himself. The device flings both Jones and Sophia into the other dimension, where they defeat the malevolent Marduk and escape back to Babylon.

Back on Earth, Volodnikov greets the pair, intrigued by their encounter with a god, and the three wander off toward sunrise in search of vodka. A bonus level revisits the Peruvian temple from *Raiders of the Lost Ark*, revealing a secret room with another golden idol.
