Summary

The Game Boy Color version of Hype: The Time Quest brings Playmobil’s medieval castle world to a handheld screen, wrapped in the Playmobil Interactive brand. Directed by Alain Tascan, the title boasts an impressive roster of thirty‑two voice actors and a soundtrack composed by Robbi Finkel, giving the portable adventure a surprisingly cinematic feel. A quirky twist for its era is the “Ubi Key” system – an infrared link that lets players exchange data with other Ubisoft GBC titles to unlock hidden content, a feature that feels ahead of its time. Though plans once floated for Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast ports, those versions never materialized, leaving the handheld edition as the sole official release of this Playmobil‑themed quest.

Storyline

The story of Hype: The Time Quest begins during King Taskan IV’s reign, when the kingdom’s champion Hype is awarded the legendary Sword of Peace. A mysterious black knight on a dragon crashes the ceremony, demanding the throne, and uses powerful magic to turn Hype into a stone statue and fling him two centuries into the past.

Hype’s statue is found in the courtyard of an apprentice magician named Gogoud. After many attempts, Gogoud revives Hype, who quickly recounts his battle with the black knight—Barnak—and his need to return to his own time to protect the king, avenge himself, and marry his betrothed Vibe. Gogoud, though inexperienced, agrees to guide Hype and explains that the only way back is to collect and charge a series of jewels, each of which lets Hype leap forward one era.

The quest sends Hype through the reigns of Taskan I, II, and III, where he befriends allies such as the dragon Zatila, brigand leader Karon and his daughter Nohlin, while confronting foes like King Taskan I, the magician Rajoth, wizard Enost, Barnak’s black dragon Vhoid, and countless soldiers, wolves, spectres and a three‑headed dragon. Rivalries erupt among the fortress, monastery, brigand village and magical laboratories as Hype gathers the needed jewels.

When Hype finally returns to his own time, he reunites with Vibe and leads an uprising against Barnak, whose tyrannical rule has turned the kingdom into a desolate, fire‑lit wasteland. Defeating the black knight breaks his dark magic, restores the land’s beauty, and the spirit of Gogoud hints at a hopeful new world as peace returns.
