Summary

The Game Boy Color version of *Hype: The Time Quest* turned Playmobil’s medieval castle toys into a surprisingly rich adventure. Ubi Soft Montreal’s Alain Tascan helmed the project, pulling together a cast of thirty‑two voice actors and a whimsical score composed by Robbi Finkel to give the handheld a surprisingly cinematic feel. One clever trick was the “Ubi Key” system – by swapping data via the GBC’s infrared port, players could unlock hidden content that wasn’t accessible in the single‑player mode alone. Although the game’s success prompted announcements for Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast adaptations, those ports never saw the light of day, leaving the handheld version as the definitive entry for collectors today.

Storyline

In Hype: The Time Quest, the story begins during King Taskan IV's reign after a civil war. Hype, champion, receives Sword of Peace, but a black knight on a dragon appears, demands the throne, turns Hype to stone and sends him 200 years back. His statue is found by apprentice magician Gogoud.
Gogoud revives Hype; Hype learns the knight is Barnak and must return to his time to protect the king, avenge, and marry Vibe. To travel forward, Hype must gather jewels that each allow a single time leap, so he must collect them in the eras of Taskan I, II, III before reaching Taskan IV. Along the way he befriends allies like dragon Zatila, brigand leader Karon and his daughter Nohlin.
He battles foes such as King Taskan I, magician Rajoth, wizard Enost, Barnak's black guards, the dragon Vhoid and the three‑headed dragon. After defeating Barnak, peace returns, Gogoud’s spirit hints at a new world and Hype reunites with Vibe to rebuild the kingdom.
