Summary

Hugo: Black Diamond Fever landed on the Game Boy Color as a stripped‑down, 2‑D platformer that feels more like a retro Bomb Jack clone than its 3‑D console siblings. While the Windows and PlayStation versions stretched into a full‑blown adventure, the handheld edition pares the action down to tight, side‑scrolling stages where Hugo hops, dodges and collects gems in a frantic race against time. The game’s visual palette leans heavily on the GBC’s limited colors, yet the designers managed to keep the signature Hugo charm alive with quirky enemy sprites and a catchy chiptune soundtrack. Even though the title was marketed under different names across Europe, the core experience remains a nostalgic dash of platforming that captures the early‑2000s handheld vibe.

Storyline

In Hugo: Black Diamond Fever, the troll’s arch‑enemy Scylla returns with a plan to become the most powerful witch ever. She needs a magic potion made from rare black diamonds that exist only on Jungle Island, where the primitive Kikurian natives are forced into slave labor. Scylla’s henchman Don Croco leads a pirate army to guard the island while the Kikurians dig for the gems.

When Hugo’s friend Fernando arrives, a desperate letter from the village elder reaches Hugo, urging him to rescue the enslaved Kikurians. Hugo rushes in, frees the workers, and sabotages the potion factory by stopping the conveyor belt and shutting an oil pipeline. Angered, Scylla accelerates the potion’s production, causing the entire facility to collapse.

With the mine crumbling, Hugo must free the elder and escape before the explosion destroys everything, putting an end to Scylla’s demonic summoning scheme.
