Summary
Hero Hero Kun (often just called Herohero‑kun) feels like a love letter to the quirky side of early‑90s Japanese pop culture. The game pulls its world straight from Kodansha’s Comic BomBom and NHK’s educational series, turning familiar cartoon faces into a surprisingly orthodox RPG that never stops cracking jokes. What sets it apart is the cast’s over‑the‑top personalities – each character feels like a punch‑line waiting to happen, and the humor shifts depending on whether you pick the boy or the girl as your hero. Even the multiplayer angle is playful: the main character can send messages via the Game Boy’s infrared link, letting friends trade jokes or recruit extra heroes straight from the Comic BomBom reader community. All of this makes the title feel less like a traditional quest and more like a rolling comedy sketch you can actually play.
Storyline
In Hero Hero Kun, the player arrives in the sleepy village of Ukiuki Town and quickly befriends a character named “Suya Suya,” the first companion they meet after moving in. However, an odd phenomenon soon grips the town: every resident has fallen into a deep slumber, leaving the streets eerily quiet. The player is the only one who remains conscious, thanks to a sudden awakening by the titular Herohero‑kun. He explains that the only way to free the townsfolk is to venture into the collective dreamscape that has trapped them. The adventure therefore becomes a journey through surreal dream worlds, where the player must solve puzzles and confront strange obstacles to wake everyone back up.
