Summary
Gex: Enter the Gecko on the Game Boy Color boils the console sequel’s TV‑hopping concept down to a vibrant 2D handheld adventure. Each level parodies a television genre—horror, sci‑fi, sitcoms—and is packed with quick‑drawn references that longtime fans will catch. You still guide the wisecracking gecko with his signature tail‑whip, bounce, and soaring karate kick, while wall‑ and ceiling‑climbing keeps the movement feel true to the real‑life reptile. Small TV sets hide colored flies that grant extra health, lives, temporary upgrades or checkpoint flags, and you must smash others to trigger hidden icons and clues. Collecting red and silver remotes at the end of ordinary stages expands the hub‑world TV set network, while gold remotes unlock bonus screens and a special art‑gallery ending. The handheld version mirrors the original’s emphasis on variety, turning each themed world into an unmistakable landmark. Its tight controls, cheeky humor—largely inspired by the Simpsons—and punchy pixel art still make it a collectible favourite for retro enthusiasts.
Storyline
After his triumph over Rez in the Media Dimension, Gex has retired and lives in solitude. Two years later his quiet routine is shattered when his TV goes blank and Rez’s face flashes across the screen.
Government agents burst onto the scene, informing Gex that Rez has returned and they need his help. Though he initially refuses, they kidnap him, interrogate him, and eventually negotiate a deal involving cash and gadgets. Gex agrees and is sent off, receiving a brief farewell from a female operative named Agent Xtra.
Traversing countless TV channels in the Media Dimension, Gex finally confronts Rez, dropping a massive television set on him. Rez claims he is Gex’s father, but Gex simply turns the screen off. The story ends with Gex sharing a hotel room with Nikki from the Pandemonium series.
