Summary
Gex 3: Deep Pocket Gecko landed on the Game Boy Color at the tail‑end of 1999, slipping the series onto the handheld while keeping the tongue‑in‑cheek TV‑movie parody vibe. The title repurposes the level‑design language of its console sibling Deep Cover Gecko, trading the 3‑D alley‑ways for bright 2D screens that still reward the series’ signature shape‑shifting tricks. I was impressed by how the portable version managed to cram the same quick‑change costumes and pop‑culture references into a cartridge limited by a modest palette. Even with a smaller screen, the game’s pacing feels like a frantic commercial break – short bursts of platforming punctuated by witty quips. For anyone hunting late‑90s handheld oddities, Gex 3 offers a neatly packaged taste of the series’ humor without compromising the classic run‑and‑jump feel.
Storyline
In Gex 3: Deep Pocket Gecko, while watching TV, Gex learns his partner and love interest Agent Xtra, now head of the TV Terrorist Defense Unit, has gone missing. She contacts him from the Media Dimension, warning that the evil Rez has returned and kidnapped her to lure Gex. Back at his secret lair, Mission Control, Gex’s butler Alfred the Tortoise offers advice and maintains the base, even giving hints when tail‑whipped.
Guided by Alfred, Gex hops through TV channels, freeing Rez’s prisoners. He thaws a red dinosaur named Rex in the Holiday Broadcasting channel and rescues his cousin Cuz from gangsters in the Gangster TV channel. Together they defeat Rez in a final battle, destroying him and saving Agent Xtra.
The PlayStation ending shows Xtra recounting her ordeal while Gex joins her off‑screen, whereas the Nintendo 64 version ends with Alfred announcing a cruise for the couple, leaving Gex in charge of his island.
